About Us and What We’re Trying To Do

Ted and SaraWe are skeptics, first and foremost. According to Skeptic.com, skepticism “is the application of reason to any and all ideas… Ideally, skeptics do not go into an investigation closed to the possibility that a phenomenon might be real or that a claim might be true. When we say we are “skeptical,” we mean that we must see compelling evidence before we believe.” Our skepticism has lead us to be highly critical of many religious, supernatural and paranormal claims.

When people ask why we do not believe in God, Bigfoot, UFO’s, Sylvia Browne, etc, the answer is simple: we simply have not seen substantial evidence to back up those claims.

Most people then demand to know why we feel the need to broadcast our feelings. “If other people believe,” they ask, “what’s it to you? Why do you care? Why do you hate God, Sylvia Browne, Bigfoot, etc.?”

We don’t hate anyone, but we do strongly dislike unsubstantiated beliefs. When we are expected to believe, pay for and base important decisions on extraordinary claims, we expect some evidence.

Certainly, other people have every right to their beliefs. But in our opinion, it is a real shame when:

  • Religious people don’t fully appreciate this life because they can’t wait to die. In his book, Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast, evolutionary biologist Lewis Wolpert describes a conversation with his youngest son, who was a born again Christian. The son says that he is extremely envious of Wolpert. When asked why, he explained, “You are going to die soon, certainly before me.” Wolpert goes on to write that his son was overly eager to get to heaven—although he could not speed up the process by taking his own life (God’s rules).
  • People refuse medical treatment on religious grounds. This was the case with 14-year-old Jehovah’s witness Dennis Lindberg, who died on November 30th after refusing a blood transfusion.
  • Hard working people go into debt because they have paid a famous psychic for vague or incorrect information (it’s the equivalent to spending a hundred dollars on a fortune cookie).
  • Parents deny their children a proper science education because current scientific findings contradict the bible.
  • Young men and women happily go off to die in countless wars because they believe that God is on their side, and that they will be rewarded in heaven. Do you think so many people would be so willing to fight and die if they believed this was the only life they had?
  • Leaders of our country make decisions based on their own religious beliefs, rather than reason, logic, or the good of the nation. (i.e. Gay marriage)
  • People elect leaders based on their own religious beliefs rather than reason, logic and the good of the nation. (i.e. George W. Bush)

The function of this site is to take a critical but fair approach to analyzing many of the religious, paranormal, and otherwise outrageous claims plaguing our society today. No more, no less.
