My Ghost Story Began in the Livingroom…
I watched an episode of “My Ghost Story” last night, and it got me thinking. Most of the stories presented were along the same vein: an old hotel, house, shop is rumored to be haunted, and the guests who visit report odd findings such as unexplained noises, objects that are suddenly found in places other than where they were last left, etc.
As usual, this type of things makes me wonder: why is the go-to-response in these cases usually “It must be a ghost!” and not, “Hmmmm, this is interesting. Let’s look into this further and see what we find”? Some of the people on this particular episode of “Ghost Story” were owners and proprietors of historical landmarks; obviously, it’s in their best interest to go on national television and push ghost story rumors to drum up business. On the other hand, some of the Ghost Story guests were ordinary people who appeared to have no vested interest in whether or not the ghost stories were true. I wonder, do they get some sort of pleasure in saying things like, “There’s such a strong presence here,” or “I used to be skeptical, but now I KNOW what i saw was really a ghost”? What makes a person think, when he/she walks into the bedroom to find that a pen has rolled of the dresser, that the most likely explanation must be that a ghost moved it?
As we watched, I turned to my husband and said, “You know, given the criteria, OUR house could be haunted.” Before we bought our house about a year and a half ago, it was owned by an elderly woman who purchased it with her husband back when THEY were first married. She and her husband lived in the house for the rest of their lives. I do not know whether either actually died in the house, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case. Now that we live here, I often have neighbors tell me of the elderly woman’s determination to stay in the house right up until the end. Is it possible that she wanted to stay even after the end?
Just this morning, with “My Ghost Story” still on my mind, I went down to the kitchen to feed my cat. As I crossed through the living room, everything there seemed in order. I went upstairs, then returned to the living room about 30 minutes later. This time, I stopped in my tracks.
In order to set the scene a little, let me explain that our living room has hard wood floors. We have a large area rug there; usually it–like most rugs–lies flat on the ground. Today, however, I noticed immediately that a good four to five inches of the rug had been lifted up and rolled backward, as though someone had intentionally left it that way. How could that be? I hadn’t done it, and there were no other people in the house with me at the time.
I thought of “My Ghost Story.” Was it possible that the elderly woman who once owned our house is living here still? Was she attempting to make contact with me? Was she trying to tell me that she didn’t care for the way we’ve decorated?
Is the rolled-back rug proof of a ghost? It’s possible, I suppose. Anything’s possible.
But the conspicuously-place blue cat toy at the edge of the rug indicates otherwise.

Anything that can punctuate the ordinariness of life, I suppose, necessarily catches our interest. Even as a skeptic I am intrigued by tales of ghosts and whatnot, even though I no longer put much stock in them.

I love the mystery surrounding a good ghost story and sure I believe in ghosts! It is a lot more fun and adds a little spookiness and a little something more to life, thinking around the corner something from beyond is lurking.
Here’s my ghost story, long story short my friend used to live in a house that we all thought was haunted as it had all the hallmarks of a haunted house as seen in the TV shows, sounds of doors opening and closing in parts of the house where no-one was at the time, rooms suddenly becoming icy cold etc. One day myself, the friend who lived in the house and another friend, were all at the house sitting on couches watching TV. There was a pair of sunglasses on top of the TV. Out of nowhere the glasses suddenly flew off the TV far enough so that they landed between me and one of the other guys feet. We were sitting on the couch which was on one wall, the TV was located against the opposite wall in a proper sized room so that should give some indication as to the distance the glasses had to travel, it was definitely not a case of the glasses simply slipping off the TV and bouncing toward us and we didn’t quite see it properly. We all had our eyes on the TV when they came flying off as though someone had flicked them off with their hand, and and they hit the ground between me and my friend. Needless to say we were all exclaiming our great shock and surprise with much WTF style profanity. I accept there will be skeptics of this story but I assure you as sure as the sun rises each day this event happened, and I have two witnesses. I can’t say it was a ghost I don’t know what the cause of what happened was that day, however I will never completely count out anyone’s theory of anything on the grounds of it being ‘too fanciful’, not after having that experience.
