Clarence Darrow Must Be Rolling Over in His Grave…
by Sara on 01/01/08 filed under Evolution vs. Creation
Nathaniel Abraham, 35, is suing the Woods Whole Oceanographic Institute of Cape Cod, claiming he was wrongfully dismissed in 2004 because of his Christian belief that the Bible presents a true account of human creation. As per his beliefs, Abraham does not accept the theory of evolution as scientific fact, and requested not to work on evolutionary aspects of research. Abraham is asking for $500,000 in compensation.
Abraham’s former position was funded by a National Institutes of Health grant that included evolution research as a vital component, although he claims that none of this was made clear by the advertisement of the position.
The Right Person For The Job
Of course, biology and evolution are so intrinsically linked, it would be pure foolishness to assume one could exist without the other. Can a person really work in a scientific field without accepting its basic tenets? If Nasa fires scientist who believes the earth is flat or that our planet is at the center of the universe—are they violating anyone’s civil rights? Should a steakhouse or barbecue restaurant be forced to employ, say, a Hindu chef who refuses to kill or cook the sacred cow? (Maybe not this sentence) Don’t these businesses and organization have a right to hire people who actual further their causes?
Conclusion
Abraham is now a professor of biology at Liberty University, in Virginia. This is a Baptist school founded by the late Reverend Jerry Falwell–where, apparently, they don’t allow themselves to be bogged down by irrelevant details like current scientific research.
